The competition is open to students and awards entries that are degree theses (master or bachelor) or course-related projects, rather than entire doctoral theses. Although the award is primarily aimed at undergraduate or advanced level (master) students, competing entries can also be based on advanced research that may later become part of a doctoral thesis.
